Fosdem is a yearly European open-source conference in Brussels. This year we have taken the trip down. There was a development room devoted to Drupal development. Besides Drupal there was a lot of attention for various Linux distributions and Linux related projects, Databases, Openoffice, Mozilla, etcetera.
Drupal unite
Drupal was the only CMS project on the conference. I'm not counting Ruby on Rails as this is more of an application framework. Clearly Drupal is one of the key players in the world of open source. Drupal had one of the bigger development rooms and the room was pretty full as well.
There were quite a number of well known Drupal community members attending the conference and it’s always nice to see familiar faces. Drupal is one of the friendliest communities on the web and conferences like these are always good to boost your Drupal morale to a higher level.
Fosdem highlights
Dries Buytaert was discussing the changes in Drupal 7, Wim Leers was discussing various performance improvements for Drupal and Neil Drumm discussing some security issues that you should address while developing. But my personal favorite was the presentation of Roel de Meester about moving content from staging to live. Their solution might not have been the prettiest but at least it works! Great stuff!
The nice part of conferences like these is that you can learn a lot about Drupal, but also that you can share your knowledge with people that are just starting with Drupal. So if you ever wonder if a Drupal track on a conference like Fosdem is interesting for you… conferences like Fosdem are interesting for everyone that want to start building websites with Drupal.
